Band 7+: University students often focus on one subject. However, some people think that universities should encourage students to learn a range of other subjects.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Most university students specialise in a particular field of study, while some argue that they should also be encouraged to take courses in other disciplines. I partly disagree with this view, as although broader study can benefit students who are uncertain about their future careers, those with a clear professional direction should be able to focus primarily on their chosen field.

One reason for this is that a majority of university students have already made up their mind what to specialise in. In this case, they should dedicate time and effort to one specific subject they’ve selected so that they’ll have been well prepared for their chosen path by the time they graduate from university. For instance, English education students, all of whom are firmly determined to become English teachers, should need to study no subjects apart from the ones required for them to teach English in the future. On the other hand, spreading time and effort too thin will only result in pointless exhaustion as they’d have to try extra hard in order to study multiple non-essential subjects while not putting enough effort into their specialist one.

Nonetheless, in the job market these days where things change at an incredible pace, there’s an increasing number of students who can’t decide on their career paths while still in university. In this particular situation, the given statement is fairly agreeable due to the fact that these students tend to make rather impulsive decisions about their major. Therefore, studying a range of subjects gives them more flexibility by keeping them well equipped for a good many jobs. This allows them to experiment with a variety of professions before finding the truly suitable ones.

In conclusion, though the statement is not entirely true considering that most university students have already had what they want to do in the future in mind, in which case learning subjects aside from their specialist ones would prove unnecessary. However, for those who are uncertain about their future career, this will give them much more flexibility and opportunity to find their profession.
