Many people believe that the government is wasting funds on arts instead of spending it on “more important” places. I highly disagree with that sentiment. Art is not only about the artist but also about its consumer, its audience. Art, weather it’s visual, musical or in anything other form, gives people the sense of community and makes them feel represented. So, for a peaceful and understanding society, the government should invest on arts.
Firstly, there are numerous ways of making art. Painting, sculpture, music, lyricism, film making, photography, and so on. Each and every one of them expresses its artist’s emotions, personality, and sometimes messages about social and psychological problems. By that, individuals understand not only the artist, but also their own emotional state. As an example, there are countless songs about social injustice, minority representation, love, heart break and many other relatable concepts. A song about alienation of minorities would make the listener represented. Even a one song, can make people more hopeful and optimistic about their existence.
Also, art connects people from diverse backgrounds. A movie, a photograph or a Painting can move people because of its relations with the mutual experiences. For instance, a painter who illustrated the grief and surrounding caused by war and touch people’s hearts all around the world. Individuals who like the artwork would feel connected, discuss the subject and might even find a relief from their pain.
In conclusion, the government should spend money on arts, because art is about humanity and society. It helps people, both sociologically and psychologically, by communicating with wider audiences with expressions of thoughts and emotions. Creating a place where members of society feel understood and represented is as important as other worthwhile investments.
