Nowadays, numerous art museums in the world are free to enter, making them available for everyone. While this tendency has both advantages and disadvantages, I personally do believe that free access is superior because it offers educational opportunities for people regardless of their financial status and encourages individuals to study about art. At the same time, the authorities should compensate funds for museums.
On the one hand, the main advantage of museums being free of charge is that they aid affluent people in learning new facts about past societies and immersing themselves in diverse cultures without a payment required. In other words, this paramount aspect may augment the level of literacy among the population as a substantial number of people cannot afford visiting museums. Furthermore, more people are likely to attend art museums, be proud of their ancestors’ works or even be inspired by them, pursuing a successful career. For example, adolescents in Russia can get “The Pushkin Card”, which allows them to visit museums for free, and this tendency has significantly improved the attendance of museums. This shows that free access to museums is indispensable to promote learning about art among individuals and is a good way to assist people with financial strain who want to be broad-minded.
On the other hand, such a trend can undoubtedly trigger serious financial strain for museums, or even can result in bankruptcy. While plenty of museums all over the world rely on payments for guidance and tickets, free access can deprive museums of this income. Another compelling con is that free tickets for everyone might cause hustle and bustle in museums. Not only does it lead to crowds and inconvenience but it can also leave a negative impression on people towards art museums. However, the governments may provide subsidies for art museums in order to eliminate these problems so art would gain financial stability and autonomy, whereas some constraints can be imposed regarding hordes of visitors.
In conclusion, while visiting museums for free has both merits and disadvantages, I am inclined to think that benefits take precedence over cons as people should get educational opportunities and be involved in studying about arts in past generations even if they are poor. Ultimately, financial assistance should be provided by the authorities for museums to avoid having financial stress.
