In recent years is getting very common to year about car-free days, os usually Sundays in wich except for peculiar cases it’s not possible to take the car. It is a way to incentivate the use of more green alternatives and reduce the costs related to fossil combustion. However, not be allowed to move by car might be a source of stress and discomfort for some.
The sustainers of implementing car-free days focus not only on the obvious implication on air pollution and noise pollution, but also on the effects on economics and culture. As a matter of fact, car-free days should be implemented hand in hand with group activites that can coinvolge the whole community. Another consequence of car-free days is a decrease in the demand of fuel, lowering the price, fundamental in a period in which petrol is getting really expensive.
By contrast is not always possible, especially in big cities to find reliable alternatives to move without a car. It might be necessary to take your personal veichle in order to go to work, to visit an ill relative or simply to celebrate a special occasion with your family. The period of the year should also be checked before establish a car-free day, in summer far more people use the car to go out of town, and stopping them would cause a major setback for tourism.
In my opinion car-free days must not be considered the perfect solution everytime, but they are a powerful tool able to give great benefits. To fully take advantage of car-free days it is fundamental to have a strong community, to boost the transit system and to accurate choose the date.
