Traffic congestion has became one of the most highlighted issue due to overpopulation. In order to solve traffic problems, governments should tax private car owners heavily and use the money to promote public transportation. This can have both benefits and drawbacks that will be discussed in this essay.
On the one hand, this solution offers significant advantages.Firstly, heavy taxation would discourage people from using private cars, which would automatically reduces traffic congestion. When people will find driving expensive, they would switch to public transport such as buses and trains. For Instance, London’s congestion charge has successfully reduced the traffic stress in city centres by 30%. Many developing countries, like Paistan, have poor public transport system due to lack of funding. If the government would spend more budget in public transports by building metro or buses projects, it would be more efficient and affordable. Thus, the money collected from the tax can be utilized in public transport that will be beneficial for citizens.
However, there are several drawbacks of this solution. This solution would be unfair for those who cannot bear financial burden of tax. Many middle class families are using cars to pick and drop their childrens from schools and for going office as they do not have public transport facility nearby them. In this situation, heavy tax would be unaffordable for them. Another disadvanatge is that it may harm economy. The automobile industry provides million of jobs and if car sales fall due to high taxes , many people could lose theirs jobs and economic growth could slow.
In Conclusion, while taxing private car owners could reduce traffic congestion and improve public transportation through funds, it also risks being socially and economically damaging. Therefore, the governnment should provide alternative meaures before implementing this policy.
