A great number of cities are struggling with traffic management in their central areas, leading to higher levels of congestion and pollution. One response to address that increase is to construct fast ring roads on the outer parts of cities, taking traffic away from centres. This essay strongly believes that these infrastructures can be helpful for city centre inhabitants and tourists. However, they can create new problems, such as moving the pollution elsewhere or even encouraging people to use their cars more.
It is well known that fast ring roads permit a better distribution of traffic flow around cities. Therefore, central area residents can live in a quieter and less polluted environment. For instance, Strasbourg’s ring road divides the city into boroughs, with each borough having its own exits and entrances in order to get to the right neighbourhood without having to drive into the city centre. Thus, Strasbourg’s city centre is much quieter than cities without traffic management. This way can also be beneficial for tourism; although the number of automobiles increases during holiday seasons, the traffic is taken to the outskirts, where other infrastructure like parking and public transportation can ensure smoother movement.
However, ring roads can create entirely new challenges. For example, in Paris, the “périphérique” has become a notorious source of air and noise pollution for the people living near it. By redirecting traffic from the city centre, pollution is merely relocated rather than eliminated. Additionally, the convenience of ring roads may encourage more car usage, exacerbating environmental issues in the long run. Instead of reducing overall car dependency, these roads could unintentionally make private vehicle travel more appealing, further contributing to global warming.
In conclusion, while fast ring roads offer significant benefits for reducing city centre congestion and improving the quality of life for residents and tourists, they are not without drawbacks. The issues of pollution relocation and increased car usage must be carefully addressed to ensure these infrastructures achieve their purpose without creating further problems.
