It is sometimes argued that a large amount of money should be invested in tourism to boost the local economy. However, this essay agrees that the industry may cause too much damage to the local environment and custom to be considered as a worthwhile industry to invest in.
Some people might argue that a tour events is financially beneficial. That is, an international sporting event such as the Olympics may attract foreigners to visit the hosting country and spend their money on goods and services such as food, souvenirs, accommodation and travel, thereby generating significant revenues.
However, I believe that the tourism business can accompany far greater enviornmental and cultural risks. For one, tourist attractions may destroy the nature. That is, because of the construction of seaside resorts and hotels along with bars and night-clubs, the coastal scenery might be ruined. What is more, because of the harmful wastes from these facilities, many animals and trees can be killed, resulting in the destroy of the local ecology.
In addition, tourism also violates the local culture. Since the local people adapt the new and advanced culture easily in order to facilitate business with the tourists from other countries, their authencity is often lost. As an example, Jeju Island, an exotic island in Korea which attracted thousands of tourists, was once popular for its unique language and traditional life style. However, due to many years of contact with tourists, we can now barely see the locals adhering to their traditional ways of speaking and living.
In conclusion, governments should refrain from allocating further budget to develop the tourism industry because it is tourism that is responsible for the destruction of both nature and culture.
