Several nations mandate their youth to join the military after completing their education. Some suggest that all countries should implement this for both males and females. In this essay, I will discuss why I strongly disagree with this notion.
Military service delays the career of young individuals. Often, fresh graduates refuse golden job opportunities, as they still have years of service ahead. They are obligated to complete their service before pursuing their careers. For this reason, many youngsters despise that they do not have the liberty to begin their professional journey once they graduate. Take doctors as an example; imagine studying medicine for seven years only to find yourself holding rifles in the middle of nowhere. This delay in practicing medicine often undermines the competence of these doctors because they start to forget medicine.
Additionally, the harsh conditions that people encounter during their service impose a serious emotional strain on their mental health. These soldiers are liable to injuries, diseases, and perhaps death. Although they are serving their country, being aware of the possibility of meeting your demise places a considerable burden on your well-being. As a result, there is a dedicated branch in psychology that studies war traumas and PTSD now. Psychiatrists are employed in military bases, which is indicative of the inhumane conditions that these soldiers endure. In other words, joining the military forces should be voluntary and only mandatory at times of war.
In conclusion, compulsory military service for everyone will hinder people’s careers and damage their mental well-being. This is why I firmly believe that it should not be enforced on the public.
