On the other hand, they can strain natural resources, harm ecosystems, and contribute to pollution.
Nowadays tourism has tremendous impacts on nations’ economies providing them with alternative income sources and driving infrastructural development. By creating sustainable revenue streams, tourism significantly contributes to the growth of economy. Visitors spend money on accommodation, transportation, food and local services benefiting various sectors. Therefore, the industry creates jobs for locals and alter their living standard. For instance, artisans sell their handmade products for travelers as a memory from the native culture, Hotels are available at the highest cost for foreigners compared to natives.
However, it is undeniable that there are negative impacts that damage the ecology including depletion of local natural resources, as well as pollution and waste problems. Tourism puts enormous stress on local land use, and can lead to soil erosion, increased pollution, natural habitat loss, and more pressure on endangered species. These effects can gradually destroy the environmental resources on which tourism itself depends. In addition to this, very often local people start copying the lifestyle of tourists; such as clothing style, talking and behave like them which may result in the loss of native customs and traditions.
In conclusion, tourism has the power to uplift communities from poverty, but at the same time it can destroy their identity.
