Hosting a multinational sport event is a huge honor for some countries in the world due to some privileges it may offer; however, for some others, being a host for such occasions can deliver more drawbacks. I believe that any international sport event will serve the host country very well since the exposure they may receive is the main key to boost the economy.
On the one hand, we surely agree that when a country is selected to be a host for a global affair, especially for games, it will instantly become a national priority because they know how impactful it will be for the economy. Supporters all around the globe could come to watch the match in the host country. If the host is strategic in promoting their potential, this large number of spectacle could spend more money not only for games tickets, but also tourism packages, merchandise, local products and many others. This exposure also has multiple effects for local vendors, hotels, and restaurants which will experience the rise in income. Importantly, a spectacular opening or closing ceremony can become a global phenomenon that may have a long term impact for future tourism in that country.
On the other hand, other nations may argue that the average expenditure for sport events is too extravagant for them. Organizing a worldwide event is costly especially for renovating or preparing all the stadions, buses, performers for the acts, technicians, and of course the athletes. This will lead to negligence of other urgent agenda one country had, including eradicating poverty. For instance, the multinational soccer match in Rio, Brazil gained many critics coming from their citizens, since they built an entire new luxurious stadion among the slums in the city, and erected big walls around to cover the displeasing part of the city where the poor people lived. This kind of experience affected other nations’ perception on hosting.
In my opinion, being a host is a historic opportunity for all countries, because every match there will be a world record being broken by the sport teams. This kind of exposure is beneficial for the host country to promote their country to the world. It will not only grab tourists, but sponsors as well. The good or bad depends on their creativity to manage the whole event.
In conclusion, although international sport events are a gambling experience to the reputation of the host, the benefits are too great to be missed.
