I think that it’s reasonable to say that everybody makes mistakes, because it’s in human nature to not be perfect. However, in my opinion, the most important thing is to learn from them and to never make the same ones over and over again. Unfortunately, many criminals return to prison after being released, having been imprisoned for various crimes. The causes of this can vary, from lack of rehabilitation or community integration to mental health issues.

The first problem that our society has on this subject is the lack of rehabilitation programs and the low acceptance rate from employers. A criminal record does not help reintegration, making it difficult to access decent housing or a fair-paid job. As an example, in many countries, former inmates are often denied employment due to their criminal records. According to a study by the National Institute of Justice in the United States, only 30% of employers are willing to hire individuals with a criminal record. This lack of opportunity forces many individuals to revert to crime to make a living. Solutions to these problems are simple: we need to be more accepting, open-minded, and less judgmental. While it is understandable that people who have committed major crimes should be scrutinized, those who made minor mistakes, had moments of weakness, or were involved in minor illegal activities without causing harm deserve a second chance.

The second problem is the lack of help provided regarding mental health issues or emotional management. For example, consider a group of men from an eastern country sent to prison; for them, everything around them stopped, time seemed to be on standby, but outside the jail’s walls, life continued. This can lead to serious issues like depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, or frustration. These mental health challenges often lead to recidivism. One solution to these problems is providing various forms of psychological therapy and teaching individuals to accept and rediscover themselves. Programs in the Netherlands, where mental health professionals work closely with prisoners, have resulted in lower recidivism rates.

In light of the above, I believe that every problem has a solution if we really put our minds to it. Especially when someone is in need or deserves a second chance, like some criminals, it is up to us to help them. Countries like Sweden and Germany, with comprehensive rehabilitation programs and mental health support, demonstrate that investing in these areas can lead to successful reintegration and lower recidivism rates.

It is a well-known fact that many criminals engage in more criminal activities after they get released from jail.
