Band 8+: Many large cities around the world lack affordable housing. What problems does a lack of affordable housing cause? How can these problems be overcome?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The shortage of budget-friendly accommodation is a pressing issue in numerous metropolitan areas globally. Two significant problems arising from this crisis include homelessness and economic disparity. However, these challenges can be addressed through government intervention and sustainable urban planning.

One major consequence of unaffordable housing is the increase in people living on the streets. With soaring property prices and stagnant wages, low-income individuals struggle to secure stable shelter. Additionally, the financial gap between social classes widens, as only affluent individuals can afford decent residences. This economic divide fosters social unrest and reduced opportunities for upward mobility. For instance, cities like San Francisco have witnessed a huge surge in homelessness due to skyrocketing rental rates, highlighting the direct impact of exorbitant living costs.

To mitigate these issues, authorities should implement housing policies that prioritize affordability like introducing rent control measures, which can prevent landlords from inflating prices beyond the reach of average citizens. Moreover, constructing high-density residential complexes with subsidized rental schemes can ensure that essential workers have access to reasonable living spaces. Singapore, for example, successfully addressed its housing crisis by developing public housing projects that accommodate various income groups, ensuring social stability.

The inability to secure economical accommodation remains a severe concern in urban centers worldwide. A combination of rising homelessness and deepening financial inequality underscores the severity of the problem. Nevertheless, by enforcing regulatory measures and promoting inclusive city planning, policymakers can alleviate the housing burden and foster a much more balanced society.
