Nowadays, foods with a high sugar content cause a lot of discourse in society about the rationality of their consumption due to the health problems associated with them. There is a belief that making sugary products more expensive would lead to reduced consumption. This essay will argue about the significance of such actions and whether they will be beneficial for society.
First of all, it is important to state that products with high levels of sugar have become ubiquitous in our lives, despite being undesirable. Fast food restaurants are located almost in every small city and sweet products such as chocolate, cakes, waffles are sold in every market worldwide. Besides, every year such companies as Coca-Cola organize special campaigns during the festive seasons, promoting their products. This viral advertising attracts millions of viewers throughout the world and the public goes to the shops to buy such sugary beverages. In this case, I think that the ban or price increase for sugary products will not only elicit disappointment among people who will be deprived of their right to choose what they want and the enjoyment they feel when consuming sugar, but also destroy certain types of businesses which are dependent or fully connected with sugary products manufacturing.
Conversely, among those who promote healthy lifestyle and diets, there is an opinion that by raising prices for high-sugar goods, people will be encouraged to opt for fewer products of this type and try to replace them with healthy ones. For instance, if a can of Cola costs three times more than what it usually does, customers in most cases will consider other options, buying still water or juice. However, though the pricey approach can serve as a barrier that prevents people from using sugary products, it may even make the situation worse as those who are accustomed to drinking or eating sugary products will search for cheaper options with the same amount of sugar which will cause worse health problems and lead to the increase in diabetes and obesity. In this case, raising the awareness of the consequences of consuming sugar-rich goods nfrom an early age can be more effective than just making these products more expensive. When society understands the consequences they are more likely to listen to the arguments.
In conclusion, it is important to mention that the quality of the products consumed and their nutritional value are paramount for human health. This understanding should not be imposed by restricting methods such as raising prices for products with a high sugar content, but should be instilled from childhood and be fundamental in society.
