Band 6+: Many old buildings protected by law are part of the nation’s history. Some people think they should be knocked down and replaced by new ones. How important is it to maintain old buildings? Should history stant in the ways of progress?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is argued that several old constructions regarded by legislation are part of a country’s heritage. Some people believe they should be demolished and modern structures take their place. I believe that the preservation of these buildings is extremely important. The reasons are keeping our heritage alive and generating profits to attract tourists.

First of all, preserving the old structures will keep our heritage alive. Peru is my hometown. It has many historical buildings from one of the oldest civilizations. The old buildings may have an important function in history, and some are even the nation’s pride. For instance, Machu Picchu is one of the world’s seven wonders, which is located in the Andes mountains of Peru. The structure of the buildings also has a mixture of the pre-colonization era with the Spain invasion time. For example, the base is usually taken from Inca Empire construction, and the upper structure is adopted from the Spanish style.

Secondly, the historical constructions would attract tourists from other countries. They would bring added value (money) to these attractions. These old buildings can be transformed into museums, and some facilities need to be improved to be accessible to tourists. Many of these structures have several stairs and levels, so it is important to make them easy to transit from one place to another with minimal risk of having an accident. Safety is essential for the tourism industry. For example, in the City of Cusco, the main temple has steep stairs that would be dangerous for visitors. So, they built a new entrance with modern and safe stairs.

In conclusion, protecting the historical buildings has several benefits. One is taking care of the historical value for our next generation, and the other one is increasing the country’s income from tourists from other countries.
