There are people that belive that old buildings protected by law should be demolished in the benefit of progress even if they are part of the nation’s history. This essay will defend the importance to mantain old buildings and that progress should not be paved over history.
It is necessary to keep historical buildings from being knoked down while keeping the necessary safety margins. Their importance resides in all the history preserved inside their doors that helps us remember what happened before us. Their history tell us who, when and why people stayed there, and loosing it might end up making us forget an important part of ourselves. If we had demolished a bulding like Rome’s colisseum we probably would have missed much information about gladiators and ancient Rome.
History doesn’t stand in front of progress, it improves the progress. Our history helps us understand ourselves and teach us a way to go forward without making the same mistakes, without history there is no progress, it’s just advancing without aim. There are always alternatives to deleting history to make way for the future. If there is an historical building in the projected path of a train track, we can just make it go arround it, it make take longer and be more explensive but it will be worth it at the end.
In conclussion, we need to mantain historical buidings to help us remember what happened inside them, and history actually helps our progress, it doesn’t just stands in front of it.
