In many people’s view, the examination technique that obliges individuals to use a piece of paper and a pen is not the most effective way to evaluate students, a statement with which I stongly agree for numerous reasons.
Firstly, the conventional approach is quite obsolete and does not respond to the needs of modern times. This is because society is in an era of technological developments, and these changes should be implemented in examinations as well. Thus, this situation may contribute to the success of students at school because today’s children are quite efficient at using technological devices. In European countries, for example, a minority of high schools have started to offer computer-based exams to their students. Consequently, according to recent research, the students in those schools have started to achieve higher scores and improved their learning skills due to being motivated.
On the other hand, besides the method, I firmly believe that examinations should not exist at all. The main reason is that the exams that last only two or three hours cannot accurately assess students because individuals may not be able to perform as well as they normally do due to myriad causes. Instead, the evaluation process should take other maters, such as attendance rates or the performance of students during classes, into consideration. Hence, a fair and healthy evaluation system may be established. For instance, some professors in Turkey allow students to pass their classes by requiring them to answer a certain number of questions during classes in a semester, and they believe that this system enables deserving and diligent students to pass easily.
In conclusion, the current examination method with a pen and a piece of paper is not efficient enough to properly evaluate educational achievement, and if there has to be a similar system, technological devices should be implemented in exams. However, I hold the belief that this concept is not good at accurately assessing students due to aforementioned reasons and should be replaced.
