Nowadays, social media has become a significant part of young people’s lives which may negatively affect their relationships and communication skills. I partly agree with that but I believe that it also is a way to meet new people.
From my perspective, social media may replace face-to-face interaction, providing an opportunity to communicate online. Some teenagers prefer texting their peers more than meeting with them in the real life and developing their communication skills. The 2026 Playboy Survey shows that young adults make romantic relationships less than the previous generation did because of several reasons, including the using of social media. As a result of that, it is becoming hard for young people to build strong relationships in the future.
However, despite these downsides, social media has a positive effect too. In the past, people could choose their friends and partners only from people around them. The Internet gives an opportunity to meet people all over the world which leads to find those who, for example, have the same interests. According to research, the Internet is the most common way to meet people in the 21st century so it would be wrong to say that social media has a negative effect on young adults’ relationships. Thanks to the Internet, many of them are not alone anymore.
In conclusion, social media may have a negative impact on young adults’ relationships and their communication skills but, in my opinion, positive effects outweigh drawbacks because it also provides an opportunity to meet new people.
