Building friendships is becoming harder in adulthood for many individuals. I believe this happens because people start to choose their environment thoroughly, but adults also have the power to level up their social situation by focusing on improvement of social skills and going out for different kinds of activities.
One main reason many people struggle to find friends as they get older is that they have built their standards in friendship. With past experiences in making friends at school and university, people already know about their friendship preferences in the adult stage which can make the process of building a connection with another person even harder. For example, studies often indicate that people tend to set their boundaries of likes and dislikes in friends such as a friend’s financial situation or educational level before stepping into the work environment.
To solve this problem, adults can take a couple of steps including taking part in various activities based on a person’s interests and developing necessary social skills. First, it is crucial for adults to participate in projects that they find engaging because this action gives opportunities to search for like-minded people. Second, paying attention to the enhancement of social skills is necessary in order to state opinions clearly and answer common questions without a sense of fear. For instance, studies suggest that people are more likely to make new friends by attending sport tournaments, music festivals and educational events.
In conclusion, more and more people have problems with making friends as they get older, which can happen because of a settled person’s preferences on the type of people they are involved with. Adults can address this challenge by encouraging themselves to work on their skills of interacting with someone and by attending campaigns that they are interested in.
