Nowadays, affordable air travel has made it possible for more people to visit different parts of the world. While some people believe that cheap flights should be promoted because they allow ordinary individuals to travel more freely, others argue that they should become more expensive in order to reduce the environmental damage caused by aviation. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe environmental concerns should be given greater priority.
On the one hand, there are several reasons why low-cost air travel should be encouraged. First of all, cheaper flights make travelling accessible to people with average incomes, rather than only the wealthy. As a result, families can enjoy holidays abroad, students can participate in exchange programmes, and individuals can experience different cultures. Furthermore, affordable air travel supports the tourism industry, which creates employment opportunities for local residents and generates income for businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and transport services. Therefore, inexpensive flights contribute not only to personal development but also to economic growth.
On the other hand, many people believe that air travel should be more expensive because frequent flying has serious environmental consequences. Aircraft release large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change and global warming. Since budget airlines encourage people to fly more often, unnecessary leisure trips have become increasingly common. Increasing ticket prices could discourage excessive air travel and encourage people to choose more environmentally friendly forms of transport, such as trains, whenever possible. In addition, governments could use the extra tax revenue from airline tickets to invest in renewable energy and cleaner transport systems.
In my opinion, although affordable flights offer clear social and economic benefits, protecting the environment is a more urgent issue. Making air travel slightly more expensive, especially for non-essential journeys, would help reduce carbon emissions while still allowing people to travel when necessary.
In conclusion, cheap air travel enables more people to explore the world and benefits the economy, whereas higher airfares could reduce environmental damage by limiting unnecessary flights. I believe that increasing the cost of air travel is a reasonable measure if it helps create a more sustainable future.
