Band 7+: Many people think that consumerism has led to significant environmental issues, while others believe that it fosters innovation and economic growth. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is an ongoing debate about whether consumerism can be beneficial. While some argue that overconsumption has led to far-reaching environmental consequences, others maintain that consumerism should be seized as an opportunity to inspire creativity and drive economic progress. Although both views hold merits, I believe that a balanced measure that controls the high-level consumption can achieve innovation and sustainable progress without compromising the environment.

On the one hand, it is undeniable that frequently spending money and constantly seeking new products – even when they may not be needed – can exacerbate environmental degradation. When people aggressively focus on excessive consumption, manufacturers are forced to be continuously exploit materials and resources to meet the demand. As a result, the extraction of natural resources such as forests, water, and minerals at a rate faster than they can naturally replenish leads to resource depletion. For this reason, the long-term and potentially irreversible harm to ecosystems and biodiversity caused by consumerism should be managed properly in order to safeguard the environment.

On the other hand, advocates emphasize consumerism can incentivize innovation and boost economic growth. As consumerism drives businesses to constantly produce and improve their products to fulfill customers’ expectations so as to stand out in the market. This push for differentiation fosters innovation in technology, design and user experience. Additionally, highly consumer makes industries more attractive to investors, leading more capital inflow in helping businesses scale up operation, and expand globally. Therefore, thanks to consumerism, our countries can attain success in terms of both innovation and sustainable economic development.

In conclusion, although there are mixed opinions on whether consumerism can bring a breath of fresh air by driving relentless creativity and economic vitality or exacerbate critical environmental threats, I believe that environmental protection practices should be integrated into innovation and economic growth strategies to create more pragmatic solutions that help keep consumerism within a threshold.
