People have different views on whether learning a second language is more important than studying scientific subjects such as math, physics, and information technology in schools. While I acknowledge that a second language offers certain advantages related to personal growth and cultural awareness, I disagree with the view that it is more important. Studying math, physics, and IT plays a more essential role in today’s world, particularly regarding career opportunities, technological advancement, and the development of critical thinking skills necessary for solving complex global challenges.
Proponents of learning new languages rather than science cite various reasons to support their stance. First, learning new languages helps children understand other cultures and promotes personal growth. In other words, they can communicate with foreigners, allowing them to exchange ideas and emotions. As a result, they can build more friendships and receive support when facing financial or emotional stress in the long run. In a world where bilingual individuals are highly valued in job markets, mastering additional languages can help reduce financial constraints. A good case in point is my home country’s capital, Tashkent, where even university students who know at least two languages, such as Russian and English, can earn enough for their daily needs and tuition fees. Therefore, learning such languages can serve as a means of finding well-paid jobs and fostering overall personal development.
Despite the potential benefits of being bilingual, I believe that math, physics, and computer science will continue to be the most important fields in the future. Firstly, math and physics create significant opportunities for learners to become professionals in their respective careers. Gaining knowledge in these subjects enhances cognitive skills and critical thinking, enabling individuals to secure well-paying jobs as accountants, teachers, and engineers. Secondly, proficiency in IT allows individuals to shape the future they dream of and drive technological progress. That is to say, professionals in these fields are likely to make our lives easier by eliminating daily work and academic difficulties, such as automating household chores and simplifying tasks like creating presentations for academic purposes. With today’s technological advancements, students no longer need to rely on language skills alone to secure well-paying jobs, as technology has opened up numerous career opportunities beyond linguistic barriers.
In conclusion, while studying a second language has undeniable benefits in terms of personal growth, I argue that focusing on scientific subjects may be more beneficial, as they provide individuals with better financial stability and cognitive development. Mastering mathematics, physics, and IT significantly enhances economic contributions and career prospects, making them indispensable in today’s world.
