Many scientists hold the view that eventually society will need to expand human habitat beyond Earth owing to demographic and environmental pressure. Although the colonization of other planets has multiple strategic advantages, I firmly believe that inevitable negative effects on people’s well-being overshadow the benefits.
One major reason why many believe that establishing life beyond Earth will become crucial is reduction of population density. This can be done not only by expanding mankind’s space for living in general, but also by the opportunity to build all the facilities from scratch. At present, urbanism and architecture technologies are more advanced than in the past. Various kinds of technology will simplify creating city layouts more consciously. In addition, creating permanent habitats in space is the most straightforward way to avoid various negative environmental effects. As a result, many consider the concept of living in space extremely advantageous.
However, these changes will pose a serious threat to people’s mental and physical health. Firstly, there are lots of individuals who struggle with various illnesses. Such a dramatic change can be triggering for such people and can cause chronic stress, panic attacks or chronic insomnia. Moreover, wether It is adapting to life in space mentally or arriving there itself, the whole concept requires perfect health conditions. For instance, astronauts train for years to strengthen their vestibular system by using special simulators and machines. Therefore, people with health complications will be seriously affected by a difficult adaptation process.
In conclusion, despite all the environmental and demographic advantages, I believe that health implications outweigh these benefits. Overall, we should care for our planet to avoid such dramatic changes.
