Band 6+: Many social media accounts are fake. What problems can this cause? What solutions can you suggest?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The number of fake social media accounts has increased significantly in recent years. This has led to some serious consequences, such as scams and identity fraud, negatively impacting user’s trust and safety in digital platforms. However, by implementing stricter verification system can help tackle this problem.

One of the major consequences of fradulent accounts is the rise in online scams. Fraudesters creates fake profile impersonating famous businessess, celebrities and personal acquaintances. Many people interacts with this accounts thinking they are legitimate. For instance, phishing attacks have become very common, cybercriminals use fake business pages to lure victim into providing sensitive informations, such as banking details. This not only leads to financial loss, but also compromise with personal security.

To combat this issue, social media platforms must introduce stricter verification systems to ensure that users are genuine. One effective approach is the implementation of AI-driven identity verification, where suspicious activities are automatically detected, and fake accounts are flagged or removed. Platforms like Instagram and Twitter have already introduced verified badges for authentic accounts, but expanding this system to a broader audience could further reduce fraudulent activities. Additionally, requiring phone number or government ID verification during account creation can add an extra layer of security, making it difficult for scammers to create multiple fake accounts. If these measures are enforced consistently, the number of fraudulent activities on social media will significantly decline, ensuring a safer online experience for users.

In conclusion, online scams caused by fake social media accounts pose a serious risk to users, leading to financial fraud and identity theft. However, by implementing stricter verification processes, social media platforms can effectively curb the spread of fake accounts and protect users from potential harm. Ensuring a secure digital space is essential for maintaining trust and credibility in online interactions.
