Nowadays, universities are increasingly shifting toward online degree programs instead of traditional physical campus attendance. Studying from home means lower financial expenses, and it guarantees flexibility and comfort for students; however, lack of social connections and interrupted internet connections are the main disadvantages.
An online degree program saves a student the cost of renting an apartment. Attending physical classes entails, in most cases, renting a bedroom space that is in close proximity to a student’s university, which can be highly expensive. Consequently, studying from home alleviates the financial burden of paying rent.
Furthermore, a study-from-home program is flexible. Students can effectively study in the comfort of their homes without side distractions like noise. For example, a young learner can absolutely focus on a lecturer’s class without any whisperings and the infrequent banging of desks from his colleagues.
On the other hand, young academicians would lack social exposure. Establishing social connections is one of the important benefits of attending physical classes. Many long-lasting relationships, including business and family connections, started through meet-and-greet events on campus. Therefore, sitting at a home desk and staring at the screen of a laptop denies learners the possibility of a real-time connection with colleagues. In addition, students are uncertain of having constant access to the internet. In many places of the world where Wi-Fi is restricted, students would find it difficult to attend virtual classes on time, which would ultimately affect their grades.
In conclusion, while flexibility and lower financial costs are the main advantages of studying from home, a lack of social exposure and irregular internet access are the major problems of study-from-home degree programs.
