Since 1950, the world has seen a global rapid urbanization, with more than 20 million people living in mega-cities nowadays. In my opinion, this is a negative development because of overpopulation and high unemployment rates.
One of the chief drawbacks of living in crowded cities is overcrowding. Since a considerable number of people think that they can make a big amount of cash while working in mega towns, they start to migrate there. It is true, to some extent, however, when a large number of people with the same thought move to a certain metropolis, they literally have to compete with others more to obtain an occupation, due to an excessive number of employees. As a result, one city’s unemployment rates would increase dramatically, leading local citizens to migrate to other alternative places., and worse of all, crime rates would rise.
Another disadvantage driven by having a large number of inhabitants in a city is overpopulation. Obviously, overpopulation’s consequences are evident, including crowded public transport and traffic congestion. However, in addition to those problems, more severe ones will occur, like housing shortages and high rents. In detail, scarcity of apartments, driven by overcrowding lead to increasing prices of rental apartments, which puts a strain on local families who suffer from making ends meet. As a consequence, not only the city’s profile will face detrimental outcomes, but also local citizens who live from bill to bill will encounter difficult challenges.
In conclusion, living in a city with a high population takes a toll on people’s daily life, putting a strain on their working career, as well as increasing crime rates. What’s more, the amount of difficulty, people with underprivileged backgrounds who live in such cities face in regular basis can double or triple, because of rising prices for rent and other goods.
