Opinions are divided on whether spending a large amount of money on their complexions in order to look younger is a positive or negative trend. In fact, these days, a majority of people opt for interventions to combat the aging process. In further discussion, I would shed light on optimism and drawbacks of this shift.
The increasing popularity of the desire for a more youthful appearance could be explained by personal interests and influences of society. Regarding the former, one of the main reasons is to improve their self-esteem and confidence by a gorgeous appearance. Side-by-side with this, some individuals argue that the onset of aging signs means their appearances are deteriorating. Thus the worries about being ugly as well as the sense of inferiority before contemporary beauty standards lead to the tendency of investment in skincare or interventions like plastic surgery. However, spending on one’s appearance could be viewed as a form of self-appreciation. As for the latter, advertisements exploit the insecurities of those grappling with the effect of aging, promoting the notion that confidence is tied to maintaining a youth-looking. Compounding this, social media platforms manipulate users with the seemingly effortless reversal of aging clock by exaggeration of effectiveness of cosmetic products or procedures.
On one hand, investing in one’s appearance or complexion could be positive activities when done in moderation, reflecting self-care and self-love. On the other hand, for those who are perpetually dissatisfied regardless of their expenditure on complexion, this phenomenon gives rise to several issues. It leads to costly and futile expenses, including the purchase of purportedly functional food and cosmetics that fail to deliver promised results, as well as repeated cosmetic surgeries that not only impact health but also alter the body’s natural form.
In conclusion, an increasing number of individuals devote both money and time into skincare routines, driven by the desire to maintain a youthful appearance, boost confidence, and practice self-care. Additionally, social influence may play a significant role in fueling this trend. While there are undoubtedly positive aspects to this approach, such as enhanced self-confidence and well-being, there are also potential drawbacks. However, if this phenomenon is taken to extremes or abused, the negatives may outweigh the positives.
