Band 6+: More and more young people from wealthy countries are spending a short time in communities in poorer countries doing unpaid work such as teaching or building houses. Why? Who benefit from this, the community or these young people?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Due to globalization and growing cooperation among world countries, nowadays many young people from developed countries are eager to spend their time in developing countries volunteering – teaching, building houses, etc. We are going to discuss of this trend and its benefits for both young people and poorer countries.

I think the reasons for youth to spend their time volunteering abroad is their willingness to gain new experience, broaden their worldview, get acquainted with foreign culture and people, and also making an impact on socially important projects. By going abroad, they get knowledge which they can apply later, when returning back home. Seeing different conditions of people living, youth from developed countries can suggest their own ideas, relying on their life at homeland. Also, they are going to have competitive advantages among their peers when applying for real jobs in the future, by standing out like more proactive people.

At the same time, developing countries also get advantages of volunteers from developed countries. Those countries are receiving not only physical help from volunteers, but also, they are making an experience exchange and may use gained knowledge about living conditions abroad in their own societies. Also, after these collaborations, the younger generation in developed countries may feel more motivated to get their education abroad in order to return back home and help their own countries to develop more quickly.

Overall, I think that both volunteers and developing countries are beneficiaries in those situations, as young people get to know more in details about the life abroad and develop their personal qualities, and poorer countries have chance to make a real-life experience exchange.
