Band 6+: Some experts suggest that teaching children to code from a young age is as essential as learning to read and write, while others argue that it narrows the curriculum and stifles creativity. Discuss both perspectives and give your own view.

Some people argue that coding must be taught from early years and should be treated equally important as reading and writing. The others however, believe that it could limit their imagination and the syllabus. This essay will discuss both these views with relevant examples and provide an opinion.

On the one hand, coding has some added advantages when learnt from early age because it is an important skill in today’s time. At present, many tech companies require a strong foundation in coding and exceptional degrees due to the growing technology. Communication skills although important, cannot carry an indvidual to their potential alone. Other skills especially coding could bring forth many opportunities to children in future. It is often noted that children who learn coding from younge age have a deeper understanding of codes and get numerous job offers.

On the other hand, despite the fact that coding is essential, it could cap the thinking capability of a child and narrow the study curriculums. The curricula of schools conduct variety of activity but not frequently as a child could engage in a particular one and will devote less time to others. Coding if implemented to school syllabuses could affect the creativity in the same way. On top of this, many curriculums have time constraints on the taught subjects. An additional subject could burden the children and the teachers. Subsequently, this could lead to reduced topics which could have an effect on the lives of children in future as they have not studied them. Many schools in Japan, for instance, have resort to a new education system which has included coding as one of the essential skills. It is expected that in the near future, many children could lose their imaginative abilities.

In my opinion, coding must be a part of the subjects but must be taught to an extent so as to help foster new ideas in children and also not stress the children and strain other subjects.

In conclusion, albeit coding could help land jobs in tech market, it could diminish many other abilities. I believe this could be solved by setting a certain limit on it so that kids can strengthen other areas as well.
