The issue of megapolises’ overpopulation is widely discussed today. Many people leave their hometowns seeking higher-paid jobs and better education. Unfortunately, cities cannot always provide comfortable living conditions as they’re already overcrowded. This essay will delve into the reasons why this problem has occurred and consider two ideas on how to increase the quality of life of overpopulated cities’s residents.
Beginning with the reasons for overpopulation, one notable issue lies in the small wages of countryside residents and a higher quality of life in general. Countryside inhabitants indeed don’t have as many well-paid job opportunities as city residents, so the easiest way to live more prosperously is to move to a city. The other reason for this is romanticizing “big city life” in pop culture. Music and movies make people dream about life in megapolises, so they strive to run away from their boring lives.
Regarding possible solutions to this problem, the governments can encourage people to stay in their hometowns with salaries increasing and encouraging initiatives among young people that can make life in small towns more interesting. For example. various festivals, competitions, and daily activities like language workshops or yoga clubs. Also, already overpopulated cities can become more comfortable with smarter housing and transport systems. Now the concept of coliving is gaining popularity and it can become a good alternative to depressing renting,
In conclusion, overpopulation in cities appeared because of the low possibility of earning money there and romanticized representations of megapolises. The quality of life in overpopulated cities can be improved by helping people to make their lives better in small towns and making housing and transportation more comfortable.
