Band 8+: News editors decide what to broadcast on television and what to print in newspapers. What factors do you think influence these decisions? Do we become used to bad news, and would it be better if more good news was reported

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Newspapers and television channels are often reluctant to prioritize good news due to its perceived lack of commercial appeal. For instance, a radio station that consistently broadcasts positive news may struggle to retain an audience, leading to financial instability. The decisions made by news editors in selecting content to broadcast are often driven by commercial interests and political inclinations, rather than by a sense of social or professional responsibility. In the current era marked by the prevalence of negative and fabricated news, people have developed a certain level of desensitization towards bad news. Therefore, it would undoubtedly be beneficial to increase the reporting of positive news.

While newspapers and TV stations endeavor to accurately cover global events, including natural or human disasters, their primary goal is often centered around circulation and audience retention, potentially influenced by specific political affiliations. Consequently, they may resort to sensational or misleading headlines and reports that contribute little to the betterment of society, perpetuating a culture of negativity. Given that a larger audience is drawn to negative news or may hold distinct political leanings, newspapers and other media outlets frequently tailor their content to align with the preferences of their readers and viewers.

The inclination towards consuming negative news or events with an added element of sensationalism necessitates a shift in the approach of both content creators and consumers. To effect a change, journalists and editors should prioritize their professional obligation to deliver unbiased, positive news and authentic global events without distortions. Similarly, as consumers, we must be discerning about the content we engage with, advocating for reports devoid of political biases that truly reflect the global landscape.

In conclusion, it is imperative for editors to uphold professional standards, while readers and viewers should exercise vigilance to ensure that media reports contribute meaningfully to the fabric of our society. Efforts to promote positive news coverage are instrumental in fostering a more balanced and constructive media landscape.
