In contemporary society, both females and males allocate a substantial amount of money to beauty products. However, in the past it was considered as women’s behaviour. In this essay, I will examine potential explanations, and provide consequences for this shift.
One of the main causes of more individuals starting looking after their appearance is the social media influence. Nowadays, many companies actively popularize beauty products for both genders, highlighting their importance on a daily basis. Moreover, many well-known people such as celebrities and influencers encourage their fans to follow state-of-the-art trends. As a result, this tendency has made many people compel peer pressure and cultural norms established in the modern society. For instance, more and more young figures have had plastic surgery and various cosmetic modifications nowadays, whereas previously natural-looking was more valued.
Additionally, perception of masculinity in society has developed significantly. Previously men’s beauty was measured predominantly by their accomplishments, and it was honored for them to have drawbacks such as scars and injuries left after manual work. However, in the present days, males’ physical appearance is treated equally with women’s. Therefore, more men have started to be well-groomed, so that they may shape an appealing opinion among strangers.
In conclusion, social media and changing cultural norms have made both women and men look-oriented. Due to the desire to fit social norms and trends, more money is spent on the beauty industry. This tendency leads to people value physical appearance more than inner beauty.
