These days, many celebrities gain fame for their excessive wealth and lavish lifestyles rather than their work. While I agree that these celebrities have a negative influence on those who look up to them, I also believe that there are still many people who are well-known for their hard work and significant achievements.
Admittedly, there are a number of top stars who garner significant public attention simply because they are born into an extremely wealthy family or have a glamorous lifestyle. Paris Hilton is an excellent example of this. Her fame is largely due to her family’s real estate empire and her own extravagant lifestyle. By continuously showing off excessive wealth by posting pictures of her private jets, huge mansions, and A-list parties, she delivers a message that one’s worth is measured by material possessions. This idea might make impressionable young people think that they need to be very rich in order to be respected and admired by others. This relentless pursuit of wealth might cause some to take shortcuts, like engaging in illegal acts, just to become rich.
Despite some bad celebrity role models, I would argue that there are many people who are positive role models for young people. Michael Jordan is a powerful testament to the belief that anyone can become famous and successful as long as they put in enough effort and never give up. He is considered one of the greatest basketball players in history and his fame and recognition is thanks to years of training, failing, and trying again and again. Young people who look up to him will learn that failure is nothing more than a chance for them to try again; hence, they will be ready to face any obstacles and make every possible effort to make their dreams come true.
Although some celebrities’ fame is in large part due to their wealth and extravagance and they send a misleading message that wealth is the main indicator of one’s worth, I would contend that there are many public figures who make significant contributions in their chosen field and who are outstanding role models to those around them.
