In the recent years, children enjoy much more freedom to show their idea independently and make a decision for themselves compared with the past. Some people believe that this development helps young people to become more creative and independent, whereas others contend that it effects in a reduction in self-control and respect. This essay will examine both perspective before outlining why I believe that too much freedom is generally a harmful trend.
On the one hand, giving children more freedom can contributes significantly to building self-reliance and real-life abilities. This is why when children are motivated to decide independently for themselves, they gradually will learn how to be disciplined. For instance, if parents allow their children to control personal spending or arrange their learning routine, the child becomes more aware of budgeting, time management, and self-control. As a result, they may gain confidence and critical thinking skills. Furthermore, freedom also effects imagination, as children who are not strictly supervised are likely to think more open-mindedly and express their ideas without hesitation. For this reason, a balanced freedom can help children grow into competent adults.
On the other hand, I strongly believe that giving children excessive independence can have more negative effects at all. The primary reason is that absence of strict rules often contributes to lack of discipline and negative behaviour. In the modern society, the majority of young people already struggle with over screen hours and scrolling on social media. For example, some teenagers spend a large amount of time playing online games instead of focusing on their education. For this reason, their school result may decrease, and they may slowly lose respect towards adults and educators. Moreover, children who are strongly disciplined may suffer from recognizing the importance of rules and responsibility towards society. Thus, I would argue that also freedom is beneficial, excessive ones has more disadvantages than benefits when it is not combined with effective parenting.
In conclusion, while allowing children to decide independently can help them to gain more skill which may necessary in their adulthood life. In my perspective, the disadvantages of this trend are greater than because children still need supervision and strict boundaries in order to develop mature individuals.
