Nowadays, the phenomenon that of people like imitating the fashion trends of others is more prevalent than in the past. There are several reasons behind this phenomenon, and i believe this largely a negative development overall.
There are two main factors leading to this issue. Firstly, fashionable information is spread rapidly by internet, and it often imperceptibly draw people’s attention in recent years. It cases that people usually observe what is widely accepted, and want to seek social acceptance. For instance, many people like imitating popular clothing or hairstyles, because such styles enjoy widespread popularity on short-video platforms. People want to reduce the risk of social exclusion, so they choose to follow fashionable trends. Over time, a form of social conformity is produced by social trends. The other reason is that some items or styles are associated with desirable meanings, leading to greater popularity among the public. Consequently, people imitate these styles to signal their identity and social affiliation, which means they can show their personality and group belonging without speaking.
However, in my opinion, this tendency brings far more drawbacks. Widespread imitation of trends will make large numbers of people adopt similar styles. With many same styles, individual expression becomes more constrained, which causes their personal preferences to be increasingly shaped by external trends. Finally, cultural and aesthetic homogenisation will be formed, and the diversity of individual expression may decline.
Therefore, from what has been discussed above, we can easily draw the conclusion that widespread fashionable information and desirable meanings results in cultural and aesthetic homogenisation.
