Taking care of children by grandparents or not has become a subject of debate in recent years, while some view the trend as positive. I believe that this trend is a negative development, despite a few possible benefits. I will outline my arguments in the following paragraphs.
To begin with, one positive aspect of this development is that the grandparents pass down values, traditions, and cultural heritage to the next generations. This process encourages the children to understand their identity, leading to a great improvement in personal growth. My cousin, for example, has been brought up by his grandparents since he was one year old. Now, he is fifteen and is aware of all traditions and cultures of our hometown-Gazakh. Secondly, the grandparents offer more emotional support and stability than parents, because, in most cases, the elder people had retired from their jobs, meaning that they have much free time to allocate time to the children. In terms of the parents, they have to work to make a living, thus the grandparents are better at this perspective.
On the other hand, in my opinion, growing up under children by grandparents has more negative sides. The main adverse aspect o this tendency is that nurturing environment is not ideal enough for children’ growing and future life. To be more specific, generational gap may lead to outdated parenting methods, because the elderly do not know clearly modern techniques to bring up children and do not teach beneficial skills, such as problem-solving, critical-thinking, and some communication abilities, which can be useful for the children’s personal and professional lives. To illustrate, my cousin I have mentioned above is so introverted, thus, he has quit his two jobs because of this character. Another reason why this trend is negative is that the grandparents may lack physical energy, leading to them to become very tired. After the age of 50-60, the senior people should take care of themselves and accept some support from their children, therefore, the responsibility of bringing up children is hard and struggling work for the elderly.
In conclusion, although this tendency may bring certain development, this is ultimately a negative development to its significantly detrimental long-term impact on the children’s future lives.
