In this day and age, there has been a growing tendency for individuals to work as freelancers, as it provides them with a sense of freedom, rather than working for an enterprise or organization. This essay will examine the reasons why this trend has emerged and several significant disadvantages of being self-employed.
One of the main reasons why many individuals are no longer interested in working for organizations is that some individuals claim that they may not have the opportunities to seek promotion in their work. In addition, working under a rigid time schedule with fixed monthly salaries leaves employees feeling bored and unmotivated. In contrast, many people believe that freelancing gives people the freedom to pursue their passions and develop their strengths
to the fullest extent. For instance, some American individuals tend to give up their administrative jobs such as accounting or auditing to work as painters, illustrators, and gardeners. In reality, doing so allows people to have more leisure time to look after their family and recharge their energy. My former senior accountant is a case in point; he resigned from my company to run his own coffee store. These days, he earns a high income and feels more relieved than before.
Nonetheless, there are several difficulties when it comes to self-employment. Indeed, people are likely to encounter operational and financial challenges during the initial stage of entrepreneurship. For instance, my sister’s old friend left her language center to work as a freelance tutor and now faces financial difficulties due to a shortage of students. In addition, she contended that no longer working in a collaborative environment frequently leaves her feeling isolated. Last but not least, investing a large amount of financial resources in a business is considered quite risky. For example, some young Vietnamese individuals tend to take out a bank loan to run a business in the catering industry. They ultimately fail to recoup their investment, which results in bankruptcy soon after. Therefore, there are also significant drawbacks to working as freelancers.
Taken together, from my point of view, working as freelancers offers people flexibility in managing their time and the freedom to travel while working. Nonetheless, it is advisable for people to take these factors into consideration before working as freelancers, as some aspects such as financial resources, physical and psychological health are essential to deal with issues that may arise in their work in order to create a sustainable foundation in the long term.
