In this day and age, an increasing awareness by communities toward men’s sports often dominates the spotlight, rather than women’s contributions to this field. The main reasons are historical dominance for decades and the greater promotion for male sports than female.
First and foremost, men’s sports were established a long time ago when women had no rights for voting or playing sports at all. Males were already established in the field of sport and were organized and professionalized rather than women’s sports, creating a legacy of fan loyalty and tradition. Moreover, gender discrimination and beliefs due to the long history of systemic restrictions affected, such as no freedom and obstructions for participating in various activities affected women participation in sport activities. For example, until the 19th century, women were not allowed to participate in any types of Olympic sports.
Secondly, longer media history is also a contributor for the greater attention towards male sport. Already established community of fans and viewers tend to view sports as a male dominated and that are centered on male’s teams and athletes. Many sports broadcasters built their brands around male-dominant leagues and events. Moreover, the most popular media-covered events were mostly about the male athletes and their wins. To cite an example, the most viewed male-dominated sport World-Cup and their winners are widely covered by the media, while the women’s world cup has not received equal global media coverage.
Taking everything into consideration, while male sports started earlier and have more attention, I strongly opine that people should consider women sports as an essential contribution to sport.
