Band 6+: Nowadays more and more people are using smartphones and computers to communicate, so they are losing the ability to communicate with each other face to face. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the statement?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

With the development of technology, people are using electronic devices more often to communicate. Based on this situation, some people think people are losing the ability to communicate face to face. I totally agree with this point of view.

In the first place, people are losing some presentation skills as tellers. Since people communicate with each other behind the screen, it is easy to ignore eye-contact with auditors in real life. For instance, a student who chats more with others on social media is more likely to watch air or other items instead of other’s eyes in reality. The student can not build a closer connection with others and make his talking more attractive by using eye-contact. Therefore this outcome will negatively affect the effect of his talking. Moreover, online typing can use punctuation, such as exclamation marks and question marks, people will gradually become unfamiliar with varied tones to express their feelings. The problem is also reflected in the fact that people are not used to using their body language to describe a scene. This is because people are not able to perform for others when they are using cellphones and computers. Thus as a teller, people are losing the ability to describe a story or express their feelings.

In addition, people are becoming stiff as listeners. As a listener, the reaction during other’s talking is important in daily life. It is effective to show people’s interest in the content. However, because of the visual functions in the social applications, such as stickers, emoji and memes, people can send others these visual things as their reaction. But people relying on them may lead to a result that people can not give their reactions in time during other’s talking. Furthermore, in virtual chat, people can quit the chat whenever they want or reply later in most situations. However, it is more likely that people need to continue communication for a period. For instance, when the relatives ask about your recent life, attending a company party, or friends who haven’t seen each other for a long time meet in a park. In these situations, always have some topics to continue the communication as a social skill is necessary.

Overall, although people still do many conversations online everyday, virtual and reality chatting have many differences, which will lead people to lose their face-to-face communication skills.
