In recent years, it has become increasingly prevalent for young Vietnamese people to celebrate global events such as Christmas and Halloween. While several people advocate this trend, the others express concern about the potential risks associated with the influence of foreign cultures. Although I acknowledge the logic behind the former view, i still lean towards the latter.
Adherents of holding foreign festivals may argue that youngsters are provided with the chance to cultivate interracial understanding . It is undeniable that when engaging in such events, youth may offer an opportunity to experience traditional cuisines, customs and traditions from foreign countries, thereby laying foundations for further mutual understanding among nations. Consequently, this can make a significant contribution to the enrichment of cross-cultural knowledge. This is exemplified by Christmas, individuals participating in this festival are inclined to discover Santa Claus’s origin and how Western countries commemorate the birth of Jesus.
Nevertheless, I still believe that importing exotic celebrations have some implications. Chief among these is that it can have an adverse bearing on local festivals. This is because the exposure to global customs in the long run causes youth to ignore traditional values and lose their sense of belonging to their own culture. Therefore, this widespread adoption of global cultures at the expense of local customs can lead to a gradual erosion of cultural identity. Besides that, celebrating these festivals is inexorably disadvantageous to individual prosperity. The commercialization of these ceremonies often entices customers to buy unnecessary things, which leads to the compulsive buying, exacerbating financial strain.
In conclusion, it is understandable that global festivals can be beneficial to a certain extent. However, I hold the belief that the drawbacks involved are of greater significance.
