Nowadays, as the tendency of globalisation continues to develop, more and more young people in Vietnam are influenced by foreign cultures. As a consequence, Western festivals like Halloween and Christmas are held annually in Vietnam. From my perspective, this trend has more negative impacts than beneficial ones to Vietnamese people.
To begin with, is undeniable that global festivals offer us various benefits. First, it encourages extracurricular activities. Second, such special occasions brings a lot of fun, happiness, and joy, as Vietnamese people will have the chances to enjoy foreign customs, foods and costumes. Consequently, young people can also learn other cultures from these celebrations.
On the other hand, celebrating foreign festivals indeed brings a multitude of bad effects. The first to discuss is that such celebrations encourage people to buy things they do not need, for example lights, candles, cosplay costumes,…. which results in a wastage of money and the valuable time. Furthermore, celebrating world festivals can make people lose their sense of identity. This is due to the fact that a majority of people, especially the youngsters, tend to care more about the fascinating innovative international celebrations than the ‘boring’ traditional ones. As a result, they may ignore the traditional festivals of their own country, which leads to several detrimental effects on preserving the traditional cultures of their own country.
In conclusion, despite a variety of benefits foreign festivals can offer us, I firmly believe they have more negative effects to young Vietnamese than positive ones.
