Band 7+: Nowadays reading habit has declined for among children. What are causes of this problem and how to be solved?

In today’s achievement-oriented society, marked by unprecedented progress, the number of book-loving children has significantly decreased. From my perspective, the root cause is mainly stereotypes, and to address this global change, schools ought to establish numerous reading competitions among teenagers.

The reason why children do not read books primarily stems from stereotypes. It is widely believed that students who read books tend to be socially awkward and seek much attention from everyone. For instance, teenagers usually judge another student who reads a book during the break because they assume that reading a book is such a tedious action that will never acquire them new valuable skills in the future. Consequently, this stereotype gives rise to a low percentage of students who read books. Moreover, judgement also contributes to this issue, as the more teenagers judge others, the worse other students will feel. For example, other schoolchildren might feel humiliated if someone disparages them because they are passionate about reading. As a result, students who enjoy reading books not only lose motivation to read, but also give up reading, which plays a pivotal role in people’s futures.

To mitigate this problem, schools should organise reading competitions where schoolchildren will compete with each other. First of all, head teachers should give a book that teenagers must read during the deadline. Eventually, the competition might include quizzes, tests, and debates, so students are able to work together and focus on education. Hence, the person who wins the reading competition should be awarded prizes. Therefore, after this improvement, the quality of young readers will have enhanced, and children will have a passion for reading.

In conclusion, the number of young readers has lowered due to stereotypes, as individuals have got used to associating reading with boredom. Nevertheless, this problem might be solved if schools introduce numerous reading competitions among students.
