Increasing tax on sugar has currently been the solution that many countries are applying to help their citizens’ diets become more healthy. This policy is associated with some disadvantages, however, i believe the benefits would outweigh the negative aspects due to its capability to enhance people’s health system as well as help them to avoid some particular diseases.
One the one hand, the disadvantages are reasonable. When imposing a higher tax on sugar, some dishes which have moderate amounts of sugar may be surged in cost, causing difficulties in accessibility for some people to sugar – an essential nutrient that our body greatly needs. Moreover, it is undeniable that not all types of sugar are harmful to health. For instance, isomalt is a sort of sugar which is extracted from the sweetness of vegetables and will not cause any problems to our circulatory system. Therefore, the policy of increasing sugar tax will affect our health and diets in a few ways.
On the other hand, the advantages of this policy can be tremendous. As currently, many companies are producing various types of instant food as well as sweets that have an excessive amount of sugar, which may cause heart diseases and cardiovascular issues for customers. Hence, increasing tax on this substance may result in a plunge in the consumption of sugar, and people could avoid some mentioned diseases. Furthermore, thanks to the high tax level of sugar, people will limit the quantity of sugar on their each meal; hence, they will have a more healthy diets.
In conclusion, the advantages of this policy would outweigh the negative aspects as it helps people eat healthily and reduces the incidence of cardiovascular diseases. Hence, imposing a higher tax on sugar would be implemented in more nations.
