It is undeniable that sports have transformed into a highly lucrative industry, with professional athletes and related companies reaping substantial financial rewards. While there are certain drawbacks to this trend, I believe that it is overall a positive development.
On the one hand, the drawbacks of the commercialization are pronounced. One of them is that high earnings may become pressure on athletes to perform consistently at high levels. For example, professional football players from the top 5 leagues in Europe like English Premier League are constantly under pressure to perform well to earn millions annually. This issue may lead to some severe mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. Another drawback often associated with the commercialization of sports is that it can result in the loss of fairness and sportsmanship. To get more profit, many sports teams may manipulate game outcomes, compromising the integrity of sports. However, many sports organizations have addressed these issues by providing mental health support and enforcing strict rules against unethical behavior, thus maintaining honesty and fair play in sports.
On the other hand, I am convinced that the above drawbacks pale in comparison to the benefits of sports commercialization. Firstly, thanks to the investment in sports, professional athletes now have opportunities to earn significant incomes, which enables them to access high-quality training and medical care. This promotes higher performance levels, extends career longevity, and inspires the younger generation to consider sports as a viable career path. Beyond that, the commercialization can also improve the quality of competitions. For example, attracting billions of dollars from televison contracts, advertisements, and related merchandise sales, National Basketball Association continuously upgrades stadiums, bringing the best quality to the audience.
In conclusion, although there are some drawbacks linked with sports commercialization, I am convinced that these challenges can generally be alleviated and that the more significant benefits this trend brings about make it a positive development.
