In today’s world, the tendency of using technology to monitor people’s lives by surveillance systems is rapidly increasing, although they are often unaware of this. In this essay I will explore if advantages overtake disadvantages.
On the one hand, mostly the purpose of surveillance systems is public safety. As an example: by video monitoring criminal activities can be exposed, or stolen things and even people can be found, by using tracking devices and many other opportunities to provide crime prevention. Moreover, some big companies use these systems to catch workers who leak company’s confidential files to rival firms. This makes not only people’s life more safe, but also police’s job easier. Despite these advantages, people should be aware of any surveillance systems around them.
On the other hand, the privacy of citizens should be as significant as their safety. The problem is that surveillance systems are often used by stalkers or by people with bad intentions. The number of people being under risk without even knowing about it is uncountable. Starting with cameras in the mirrors, ending with tracking devices in your own phone, which probably was not notified to you when you bought it. Consequences of this usage of surveillance systems have no limits, as an example: leaking individuals private information or threatening people by having them, sometimes even big companies like google may leak their users information, however we do not know if it was really just an accident.
To sum up everything below, while surveillance systems may pose risks related to privacy, it is also one of the main security systems in many areas. It is clear for me, that advantages overtake disadvantages
