Band 5+: Obesity is a growing problem around the world. Why is this? What can be done about it

Obesity has had a demonstrable effect on modern society, especially with regard to people’s habits. As fast foods have grown at an alarming rate, more and more people are exposed unhealthy foods, leading to overweight in individuals’s body, which this essay will explore along in addition to their possible solutions.

One of the biggest problems contributing to obesity is that overconsumption of junk food Many people, tend to consume foods high in sugar and salt because it is cheaper and more convenient than healthier options. This leas to excessive calorie intake, which contributes to weight gain and increase risk of chronic disease over time. To solve this problem, cooperation between governments and food companies is needed. Governments can introduced taxes on sugary and salty products to discourage consumption while mandating clearer labeling of calerie content to make consumer informed choices. For example, Mexico introduced a sugar tax in 2014, which resulted in a 7.6% decline in sugary drink consumption within first year, demonstrating how taxation policies can effectively reduce unhealthy eating habits

Another issue is the prevalence unhealthy lifestyle and lack of awareness about proper nutrition. After the pandamic COVID-19 many people opted to stay at home or work remotely , leading to working long hours at a desk a significant factors in rising obesity rates. Furthermore, adolescents often lack nutrition education, causing them consume high-calorie diets without understanding the associated health risks. This problem could be addressed by promotigng physical activites alongside with public education campaigns. For example, in Denmark has implemented initiatives to promote cycling as a primary mode of transportation, which has significantly improved physical health levels and reduced obesity rates. Similarly, Japan, where they educated children by creating the ‘Shokuiku’ program about balanced diets, proper eating habits, and food culture, keeping country’obesity rates among the lowest in the world.

In conclusion, while obesity is caused by variouse factors such as unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyle , it possible to address these issues through collaborative effort. Governments and food companies must take accountability by implementing taxation and clear labelling to discourage unhealthy eating habits. Additionally, promoting physical activities and improving nutritional education cam empower individuals to make healthier choices, ultimately improving the overall well-being of society.
