This essay will elaborate on the reasons behind my partial agreement with this perspective.
On the one hand, there are several compelling rationale for the detrimental consequences of advertising. For one, it can tilt societal development towards materialism. Driven by the desire to achieve enormous financial gains, some brands inevitably succumb to the lures of utilizing manipulative tactics to entice consumers into purchasing unnecessary products. This not only leads to overconsumption but it also shapes the development of a society fixated on material wealth in the long run. Furthermore, advertising may negatively impact consumers. Given the increasing competitiveness of the market, some companies exaggerate the benefits of their products, creating untrue expectations among consumers. Thus, not comprehensively informed about the products they buy in terms of suitability and effectiveness, purchasers risk bearing the adverse consequences of their unwise decisions.
On the other hand, I am convinced that the advantages of advertising do not pale in comparison with its demerits. First, it plays a crucial role in stimulating economic growth. Undeniably, the competition among brands is heightening, meaning that they need to constantly upgrade their products to become aligned with the consumers’ needs and survive in the market. The prioritization of ethical advertising, indeed, promotes the diversity and quality of commodities, thereby greatly contributing to economic development. Additionally, advertising is capable of raising awareness of social issues among its prospective targets. Several companies subtly integrate social issues into their advertisements that are placed across multiple platforms. This strategic approach not only informs audiences but also influences attitudes and behaviors, ultimately catalyzing greater social consciousness and advocacy.
In conclusion, it is my vantage point that while the disadvantages of advertising are irrefutable, it confers equally substantial benefits, including stimulating economic growth and raising awareness about social issues.
