Colonization—despite what happened a century ago—has probably produced a richer crop of influences than any event in Indonesia, but I honestly doubt, in spite of a 300 year span in which the nation underwent certain dynamics in politics and government, whether it is globalization that fully contributes to societal linguistic ability. Nevertheless, the fact that of current days, Bahasa Indonesia slowly failed its younger generations simply depicts a failure in preserving heritage of their own. It is now almost certain that within a few years will pass a reign of overly global consumption, resulting in faded originality: mass leaning towards foreign languages. Aforementioned points as stated in the latter will be discussed further in a respectful yet positive manner.
Being regarded as the international expressive feature indeed had long since become a major issue in one lifelong journey of reaching the ‘top’. Eventually, it leads to a growing tendency in frequent rates of usage while having a mixture of two languages combined. Today, many states have fully developed to an extent of replacing their own with other languages. These will produce more problems for the local citizens by increasing the gap between the older population and those younger in age.
Furthermore, Indonesia in particular, have shown a significant distinction due to access in learning the languages, which have caused a stir in widening the gap between different social classes. For instance, the rich tend to have more access to learning different languages compared to those who have financial situations. As a result, Indonesia will have to deal with certain problems leading to a state of confusion; and a sense of nationalism at stake.
To conclude, as much as it is noteworthy to adapt in a new environment due to globalization, we must not forget the basics: adhering to our own culture and traditions. The language itself may not be the problem, but it is pivotal for the ones holding at stake–the government–to help by creating a space where both languages can be learned equally: strengthening ‘bahasa’ skills of its citizenships as fundamentals, and other languages as additionals.
