It is a fact that people work longer hours in some nations. Working late might be beneficial for some people to earn extra income and gain experience while this might affect other’s family relationships. This essay will discuss both views and provide a conclusion.
On the positive side, many employees work more hours to increase their earnings and knowledge. Most labor regulations state that hourly wage for overtime hours is double normal hours, making it attractive to most workers. For example, a family man who have bills and expenses usually is in debt and need for more cash to repay what he owes to others. For this man, it is either taking more hours at his current job or to search for a part-time job to manage his liabilities. Moreover, learning new skills require some people to be patient with their superiors and invest their time to achieve their goals. This is true mostly to temporary staff such as internship students.
On the other hand, individuals who prefer to work late may negatively impact their family relationships. This is mainly observable in marriages where a house wife and children exist. For instance, if a person chooses work over family, he will suffer a great deal to compensate for the missing time of his children growing up while he is away or helping his wife during challenging times. Not only such a man should be there to teach his kids manners and life lessons but also to help with home duties. This is will not be possible while putting job’s interests ahead of his family.
In conclusion, even though job contracts may offer higher salaries for working double shifts to make more money or accumulate experience, time spend there could have an adverse effects on family relations. Therefore, public awareness about work-life balance should be increased to avoid the aforementioned consequences.
