Band 7+: People had better buy something that fills their needs not trusting in ads. To what extent do you agree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, advertising has become increasingly popular on a global scale, particularly in the field of marketing. It is commonly opined that people should purchase products which match their needs, not relying on various advertisements. Although this might be somewhat true, personally, I wholly agree with this assertion because most products cannot be of high quality and people’s tastes fundamentally differentiate from each other.

Undoubtedly, individuals ought to buy products based on their needs by selecting in the markets rather than directly depending on advertisements. This is because conventional way of shopping enables customers to choose appropriate items they need, considering several factors, such as quality, size as well as price. As a consequence, people may be satisfied by their efficient purchase. Furthermore, the vast majority of advertisements on different medias, including television, internet or boards in the streets are biased since they are transmitted or showed by giving entirely wrong information regarding products in order to arouse interest among potential customers. This, in turn, cannot fulfil people’s necessities at all.

Despite this, adverts may be somehow beneficial. Proponents of this opinion cite that If they were consistently showed on prevalent social medias, this would allow people to become aware of adequate information about various things on sale, especially about their costs and date when they were produced. However, most items frequently advertised are not reliable enough to spend money at present. It is highly probable that quality and any other features are not as described as in the adverts, resulting in vain expenditures on inferior items. Surveys conducted by scholars at Oxford University, for instance, have supported this, showing that 87% of those who spent a considerable amount of money on diverse household things based on adverts on the internet had often lodged numerous complaints about poor quality of what they bought by the end of 2023.

To conclude, it appears to me that advertisements need to be utterly ignored when buying something as they could not guarantee the standard of products, whereas it is sometimes possible to know sufficient data about a variety of necessary things.
