In recent times, it has become increasingly common for individuals to talk about money. While this trend primarily stems from rising cost of living and social comparison, I believe it presents some challenges regarding increased negative feelings and weakened relationships.
Discussing financial matters can be attributed to a variety of factors. One of them is raising the cost of living. With the ever-increasing cost of living worldwide, especially in large cities, individuals have faced massive challenges in meeting their basic needs, such as housing, food, utilities, accommodation, and transportation. Given this heavy financial burden, it is not surprising to see many people discussing financial matters. Another primary reason why many people talk about money is social comparison. This is because social media shows individuals about wealth, a luxurious and aspirational lifestyle that comes at the cost of money. This can ultimately not only increase social comparison but also foster hot discussion among the population on the role of money.
Nonetheless, in my view, the disadvantages of this situation are significant. The main downside of talking about money is increased negative feelings. When people hold conversations related to money, they are likely to suffer from debilitating feelings, including anxiety and stress, as they may have some financial instability and a tight budget. Another disadvantage of discussing financial matters is a weakened relationship. This is because if families, friends, and acquaintances gather at parties, celebrations, and events, they may reduce connection with each other, as their main hot topic related to financial problems and money instead of holding meaningful conversations, which is essential for social cohesion and bonds, like talking about personal and professional life, achievement, and ambitions.
In conclusion, although speaking openly about finances is driven by cost of living and social comparison, I believe it poses some drawbacks, such as increased debilitating feelings and strained relationships.
